Seafood and Health Benefits for Children

Children need a diet full of vitamins in order to grow and develop correctly. At the same time, they need less energy than adults. That is why food with a high nutrient density and manageable calorie content is particularly important for a child’s wellbeing.

The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6–19) has obesity. Parents can help their children lead a healthy life by giving them healthy food as early as possible. With its high protein content and healthy fatty acids, fish is an important food for a nutrient-rich diet. Three meals with fish a week are ideal for families with children. Another benefit for the children’s diet needs: fish is easier to chew than meat, because it contains less tissue.

The valuable omega 3 component DHA is already contained in breast milk. This is important, because it has a positive effect on the development of a child’s brain and vision. Studies also prove a connection between the DHA content in breast milk and the DHA consumption of the mother. Just as during pregnancy, women should also consume a sufficient amount of omega 3 fatty acids while breastfeeding. The amount needed is covered by two healthy meals with fish a week, one of which should consist of fatty fish like mackerel or salmon.

Furthermore, babies need a lot of vitamin D in order to support their quickly growing skeleton. That is why a lot of children receive vitamin drops. But fish is a good source of vitamin D as well.
